This new residence was commissioned by the owners of a nursery school in order for their family to live on the same property in order to effectively manage not only the school but also the farm where the school is located. Due to Township restrictions, this residence was actually a reconstruction of an existing building using its exact footprint. This family of five had many different needs but the biggest desire was to establish an open and connected living/dining/eating space on the first floor to keep the family connected. The existing grading, with a few modifications, allowed for a walkout basement to be included which was turned into the family’s entertainment space with a direct connection to the exterior. The design of the stair provided a vertical connection throughout the home to pair with the desire for connected space on the first floor. Exterior materials were selected to continue the use of natural materials to establish this new structure an immediate connection with the existing structures and character of the property.
