This family subdivided property from relatives and wanted to establish a new residence within walking distance to family. Coming from a 1950’s era single story home in a denser community, the goal for this project was to emphasize the size of the home and property to provide spaces that were interesting and comfortable to live in with a contemporary feel. The experience of approaching the residence up a rolling hillside was used as a departure point and also as a method to create privacy in an area that was formerly wooded with young growth trees. Moving across the length of the home on the exterior and then returning on that same direction with spaces oriented to reconnect back to this area of movement keeps the space active. Connections happen between the living spaces for the entire first floor and the open stair design sets an interior connection to the second floor and has views back down the hillside.
